Australian Tourist Accused in Café Rampage Shocks Vietnam
A quiet late-night café in the coastal city of Da Nang became the scene of chaos after an Australian man allegedly launched a destructive rampage that left customers trapped, property smashed and staff shaken.
What began as an ordinary evening at a popular local café quickly escalated into one of the most talked-about incidents in Vietnam’s hospitality sector this year.
The disturbance unfolded shortly before midnight on May 29, when a foreign customer entered the venue and took a seat without ordering. According to information released by the café management, staff initially believed the man was simply taking time to review the menu.
For several minutes, employees waited patiently for an order that never came. Eventually, a staff member approached the customer and politely invited him to place an order at the counter.
Witnesses say the man remained seated and did not respond in a way that allowed staff to proceed normally. Concerned that language barriers might be causing confusion, employees attempted to assist him directly at the table.
At that point, another customer seated nearby stepped in to help. The customer reportedly spoke English fluently and volunteered to assist with communication between the café staff and the foreign visitor.

To facilitate the conversation, a mobile phone translation application was used. What happened next would trigger a chain of events that few inside the café could have imagined.
According to accounts from those present, the foreign man allegedly took possession of the customer’s mobile phone during the translation process and refused to return it.
Witnesses said the owner of the phone repeatedly requested that the device be handed back. Instead, the man allegedly continued scrolling through the phone, opening applications and viewing private messages.
The customer reportedly reminded the individual that the phone contained personal information and that reading private communications without permission was unacceptable. Despite multiple requests, the device was not returned.
Staff members later stated that the customer remained calm throughout the encounter. Rather than escalating the disagreement, he reportedly asked employees to contact security after noticing what he believed were unusual and concerning behaviour patterns.
Before security personnel could intervene, the situation dramatically worsened.
According to witnesses, the man suddenly stood up, removed his shirt and smashed the customer’s phone. He then allegedly warned everyone inside the venue that they had only seconds to leave.
What followed was a wave of destruction that spread rapidly through the café.
Staff members described scenes of panic as furniture, decorative items and expensive café equipment became targets of the outburst.
Large sections of the venue reportedly suffered significant damage. Tempered glass windows were shattered, interior fittings were destroyed and numerous pieces of bar equipment were rendered unusable.
Customers also experienced personal losses. Several electronic devices, including laptops and mobile phones belonging to patrons, were reportedly damaged during the incident.
The destruction created immediate safety concerns throughout the building.
With the café occupying multiple floors, guests located on the second and third levels suddenly found themselves unable to leave safely while the situation remained active below.
Witnesses described moments of confusion as customers attempted to determine whether it was safer to remain where they were or attempt an exit.
Fortunately, emergency services responded quickly.
According to the café’s statement, police officers arrived outside the premises approximately five minutes after the disturbance began.

The arrival of law enforcement appeared to change the suspect’s behaviour. Witnesses say he began searching for a way to escape and moved toward the upper levels of the building.
During this period, several confrontations allegedly occurred between the suspect and customers attempting to avoid him.
One male customer was reportedly placed in a neck hold during the chaos, adding further concern for the safety of those trapped inside the venue.
Police officers moved swiftly to contain the situation.
After several tense minutes, authorities reportedly surrounded the suspect and brought the incident under control.
The man was taken into custody at approximately 12:30 a.m. on May 30 and transported to a local police station for questioning.
According to information released by the café, the suspect allegedly refused to cooperate with investigators and continued shouting while in police custody.
At the centre of the story is one detail repeatedly emphasised by management: staff members had no prior conflict with the customer.
The café stated that no argument or disagreement existed before the phone incident. Employees maintain that the confrontation stemmed entirely from the suspect’s interactions with another customer rather than any dispute involving staff.
That distinction has become important as discussion of the incident spreads across social media platforms in both Vietnam and Australia.
Many online users have praised the restraint shown by employees and customers who attempted to de-escalate the situation before violence erupted.
Others have focused on the broader implications for tourism and international visitors in Southeast Asia.
Da Nang has built a reputation as one of Vietnam’s safest and most welcoming destinations for foreign travellers. The city attracts millions of international visitors every year, including a growing number of Australians.
Local business owners have expressed concern that isolated incidents such as this could unfairly affect perceptions of the city’s hospitality industry.
The café involved has also received an outpouring of support from both Vietnamese residents and members of the expatriate community.
Messages of encouragement began appearing online within hours of the incident becoming public.
Some supporters even offered financial assistance to help the business recover from the extensive damage.
In a move that surprised many observers, the café declined all offers of monetary donations.
Management stated that while they deeply appreciated the concern and kindness shown by supporters, they would not accept money or material contributions from the public.
Instead, the owners said their focus remains on repairing the premises and reopening as soon as possible.
The extent of the destruction, however, has forced the business to remain closed longer than initially expected.
Managers indicated that repairs may require additional days due to the larger-than-anticipated scope of damage uncovered after the incident.
For many Australians following the story, the case serves as a stark reminder of how quickly seemingly minor interactions can escalate into major public incidents.
It also highlights the challenges faced by hospitality workers who must respond to unpredictable situations while ensuring the safety of customers.
As police continue their investigation, many questions remain unanswered, including the circumstances that may have contributed to the suspect’s behaviour and whether criminal charges will ultimately be filed.
What is clear, however, is that an ordinary night in one of Vietnam’s most vibrant tourist cities turned into a frightening ordeal for dozens of people.
The shattered glass can be replaced. The damaged equipment can be repaired. Lost business days can eventually be recovered.
But for customers and staff who witnessed the events unfold firsthand, the memory of those chaotic minutes inside a Da Nang café is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
